Capitol City Produce planning to double warehouse space in Baton Rouge

Capitol City Produce is planning to add more than 54,000 square feet to its existing 33,800-square-foot warehouse on Commercial Avenue, and bring in more specialty and nutritional foods to offer customers.

 

The company will file expansion plans with the city-parish Planning Commission today for the project and will begin construction as soon as it receives the green light from all required agencies, Capitol City Produce says in a news release. The 88,361-square-foot facility is expected to be open in the first quarter of 2017.

 

Along with expanding the distribution facility at 16550 Commercial Ave., which is situated just off O’Neal Lane near its intersection with Interstate 12, Capitol City Produce management will redesign and renovate the existing the 33,800-square-foot space. The company says the expansion is needed to keep up with the demand for local produce and continue growing the business.

 

“We are excited about the expansion of our facility to support expanded offerings and to help our customers continue to grow,” says owner and CEO Paul Ferachi, grandson of Capitol City Produce founder Vincent Charles Ferachi, in a statement. “We have been working towards this for a couple of years and look forward to bringing an expanded best-in-class food safety certified distribution facility to the region.”

 

Spokeswoman Anya Hudnall says it is too early to know what new products the company will bring in, because they are still working on that. But she adds they are looking to add new healthy and premium food choices, and specialty and nutritional foods.

 

Opened in 1947, Capitol City Produce is one of the largest produce distributors on the Gulf Coast, supplying restaurants, schools, hotels, casinos, hospitals, supermarkets and offshore facilities.

 

The Planning Commission will take up the application at its April 18 meeting, along with any others filed by Thursday’s deadline to be included on the meeting agenda, assuming there are no issues with the applications.
